Marcus Brutus is an American artist born in Maryland in 1991. He lives and works between New York and Washington. Brutus is particularly interested in figurative art, and more specifically portraiture, which he constructs as assemblages of contemporary images and relics. Rather than a simple collage or frozen postcard, his work is an exploration of continuity, connection and transition. Marcus Brutus builds bridges between eras, suggesting moments that awaken buried or forgotten memories. The essence of his work lies at the intersection of personal memory, history, anthropology, current events, literature and popular culture. Evoking ebony marquetry, he works on faces and skins with a mastery that skilfully plays with light and shadow. His brushstrokes are broad yet imbued with subtlety, the folds of clothing are palpable and bodies seem to be in motion, dotted with touches that underline certain areas and guide the eye. For him, color is as important as the subject or narrative.
