Afternoon with Boys and Peacock in Altadena is Jennifer Rochlin’s first time with bronze. Rochlin chose to create a sculpture with voluptuous forms. Two boys are represented with a book in their hands. In the background are some trees, whose leaves are quickly replaced by the plumage of a peacock that encompasses the scene and embraces the entire vessel. The feathers then become motifs and mingle with the artist’s teeth marks, giving an almost abstract rhythm to the work. The sculpture is fully patinated and hand-engraved, leaving the bronze bare and highlighting Rochlin’s sgrafito lines. Jennifer Rochlin then subtly applies oil paint, enhancing the contrast between the black patina and the raw bronze, making each work totally unique.
